Steel Bones Hosts One of the UK’s Largest Amputee Family Gatherings at Duxford to Celebrate Limb Loss & Limb Difference Awareness Month

Duxford, Cambridgeshire – Today, Steel Bones marked Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month with one of the largest gatherings of amputee families in the UK, bringing together a vibrant community of dozens of individuals at the iconic Imperial War Museum Duxford.

Families travelled from across the country to join this empowering day out, filled with inspiration, connection, and celebration. Set among historic aircraft and interactive exhibitions, the event offered a space for amputees and their loved ones to bond, share stories, and celebrate their strength — all while raising awareness of limb difference in a powerful way.

The IWM Team treated the group with incredible care and support to ensure our visit went smoothly and we got to see all the highlights. A private tour with John was also enjoyed with a number of insights including Douglas Bader’s squadron.

Steel Bones, a UK-based charity supporting amputee families, organised the fully inclusive day to help break isolation and unite the community in honour of this important awareness month.

“We wanted to mark Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month by showing just how strong and united our community is,” said Emma, Co-Founder of Steel Bones. “Seeing so many families together — laughing, learning, and lifting each other up — has been incredibly moving.”

The day included exclusive guided tours, hands-on children’s activities, and a shared picnic where friendships formed and support flowed naturally. For many attendees, it was the first time they’d met others with similar experiences — a vital step in building confidence and hope.

“I loved seeing other kids like me,” said one young attendee “It makes me feel proud and not alone.”

This event is just one of many initiatives led by Steel Bones to support the amputee community throughout the year, but today stood out as a meaningful celebration of visibility, inclusion, and resilience.
