Warm weather can be uplifting, but for amputees, it can also bring unique challenges — from skin irritation to overheating in your prosthetic socket. Here’s how to stay cool, comfortable, and safe during those hotter days.
1. Protect Your Residual Limb
-
Keep the skin clean and dry – Sweat can cause irritation and increase the risk of infection or rashes.
-
Use a gentle, non-perfumed antiperspirant on the residual limb (check with your prosthetist first).
-
Change liners and socks frequently – Moisture-wicking socks or liners can make a big difference.
-
Air out your limb regularly – Remove your prosthesis for short periods when resting indoors.
2. Caring for Your Prosthesis
-
Wipe down sockets and liners daily with antibacterial wipes or mild soap and water.
-
Avoid leaving your prosthesis in the sun or a hot car – extreme heat can damage materials or affect fit.
-
If the fit feels tighter due to swelling, elevate your limb and cool it before re-fitting the socket.
3. Hydration Is Key
-
Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
-
Dehydration can increase swelling and fatigue — both can affect how your prosthesis fits and feels.
4. Dress for the Heat
-
Wear lightweight, breathable clothes — cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics work best.
-
Hats and sunglasses protect from direct sun exposure.
-
Use high-SPF sunscreen on any exposed skin, especially around the prosthesis if it’s visible.
5. Plan Your Activity
-
Avoid being out during peak heat (11am–3pm).
-
Plan walks or errands early in the morning or later in the evening.
-
Take regular breaks in shaded or cool areas.
6. Watch for Warning Signs
Be alert for:
- Increased skin redness or chafing
-
Swelling in the residual limb
-
Signs of dehydration: dizziness, headache, or dark urine
-
Overheating or heat exhaustion (seek medical advice if unsure)
7. Reach Out If You’re Struggling
You’re not alone. If hot weather is affecting your comfort, prosthetic use, or wellbeing:
-
Speak to your prosthetist about socket adjustments or alternative liners
-
Contact Steel Bones for support or peer advice
-
Join local meet-ups or online chats to share tips with others who get it
