Christmas can be a joyful time for many, but at Steel Bones we know it can also be challenging — especially if you’re living with limb difference, dealing with ill health, bereavement, or feeling isolated. This blog is here to offer gentle, practical suggestions to help make the festive period a little easier and to remind you that you’re not alone.

Acknowledging That Christmas Can Be Hard

For some people, Christmas brings up difficult emotions. You may be missing loved ones, coping with changes to your health, or finding the season overwhelming. That’s completely valid. This isn’t about forcing cheer — it’s about finding small, manageable moments of comfort or connection where you can.

Volunteering and Getting Out, If You Can

If you’re able to get out and about, volunteering over the festive period can be a meaningful way to spend time and connect with others. Many places remain open over Christmas and are often grateful for extra help, including:

  • Care homes and nursing homes
  • Community support hubs
  • Homeless shelters
  • Animal shelters

Whether it’s helping serve meals, making cups of tea, having a chat, or spending time with animals who need care and cuddles, volunteering can help reduce feelings of isolation while making a real difference.

Finding Comfort at Home

If staying at home feels like the right option for you, there are plenty of comforting ways to pass the time.

Television can be a real companion over Christmas. You might enjoy planning ahead and choosing programmes or films you’re genuinely looking forward to. Festive church services, carol concerts, favourite films, and Christmas specials can all be enjoyed from the comfort of your sofa — ideally under a cosy blanket with food you enjoy.

Radio continues throughout the festive period, often with special Christmas Day programming. Listening in can provide a sense of company, even when you’re on your own.

Podcasts are another great option. The Steelbones Amputee Pod has a growing back catalogue you can dip into at any time. You might also enjoy festive episodes from comedians, actors, musicians, or presenters you like.

Staying Connected

If you have neighbours you feel comfortable with, popping in for a chat or giving them a call can make a big difference. You might also consider phoning friends or family who live further away — sometimes hearing a familiar voice is enough to lift the day.

If you’re feeling lonely over Christmas, please know that you can contact Steel Bones. We’re happy to arrange a phone call and have a chat with you over the festive period.

When You Need Extra Support

If things start to feel overwhelming, or you feel you need professional support, there are excellent services available:

  • Mind – offers extensive mental health information and support for adults and children.
  • NHS 111 (Option 2) – connects you directly with the mental health team if you’re struggling.
  • Samaritans – open throughout the festive period. You can call them free on 116 123 for crisis support or simply someone to talk to.
  • Shout – a free text service for times when talking feels too difficult. Text 85258 and a trained volunteer will text back. You can continue by text or arrange a call if you feel comfortable.

All of these services are confidential and free to access.

Please Reach Out

If you’re struggling over Christmas, we encourage you to reach out — whether that’s to Steelbones, one of the services listed above, or someone you trust. Many of us have found this season difficult at one time or another, and asking for support is a strength, not a weakness.

From all of us here at Steel Bones, we hope you’re able to find small glimmers of happiness this Christmas and take the season at your own pace. We’d love to hear from you and know how you’re getting on.
