A carer is someone who helps another person/s, usually a relative or friend, in their day-to-day life. This is not the same as someone who provides care professionally, or through a voluntary organisation. Usually Carers do not even realise they are ‘Carers’ as they do what they do out of love and support for the person needing support.
The Care Act 2014 relates mostly to adult carers – people over 18 who are caring for another adult. This is because young carers (aged under 18) and adults who care for disabled children can be assessed and supported under children’s law.
It is important that Family Carers receive as much support as possible although they often do not have the time to do this. If you or someone you know is caring please encourage them to check out Carers UK Resources and also look at local support groups.
Every unpaid Carer is entitled to a Carers Assessment and should register as a Carer at their GP surgery.
